Why Batteries Matter
Batteries are everywhere these days. In cars, in solar stuff, in electric vehicles… you see them all over. And because people use them so much, everyone wants to know how long a battery lasts before it goes bad. A battery that dies too soon is just a headache and costs more money.
What Battery Life Cycle Testing Is
Battery life cycle testing is just a way to check how many times a battery can be charged and used before it starts losing power. It’s kind of like seeing how long a battery really works. Companies do these tests to make sure the batteries don’t die too fast and to see if they can make them better.
Some people call it cycle testing, some call it aging testing. Usually it’s done in a lab. They charge it, then use it, then charge it again, over and over. They watch numbers like voltage, current, and capacity. When the battery can only hold about 80% of its original power, the test usually stops.
Battery Life Isn’t Fixed
Battery life is not a fixed number. It changes depending on many things. How deeply the battery is discharged, how fast it is charged, and how hot it gets all affect the result. Battery type and materials also make a big difference. Because of this, different batteries can have very different life cycle results.
Capacity is the main thing people look at in life cycle testing. When capacity keeps dropping, it means the battery is getting old. Testing conditions can be adjusted to be closer to real use, like changing temperature, load, or how fast you charge or discharge it.
Both internal and external factors affect battery life. Inside the battery, the materials, structure, and size affect resistance and heat. Outside factors like room temperature, humidity, and how the battery is used also matter a lot.
Battery Testing Equipment
Battery life cycle testing is done using special machines called battery cyclers. When picking a cycler, you need to think about battery voltage, current, size, and what you want to test. The cycler should be able to store data and run long tests without stopping.
These tests take a long time, so many people like cyclers with multiple channels so they can test several batteries at once. Some machines also have impedance testing to check changes inside the battery while it cycles.
Most battery cyclers come with software to record and view the results. Temperature monitoring is important because heat can ruin a battery. Cyclers that handle data directly in hardware usually give more reliable results.
Testing Methods
Different batteries have different ways of testing. For lithium-ion batteries, the battery is discharged to a certain voltage, then charged again at a fixed rate. This is repeated until the battery drops to the target capacity. Some standards, like IEC 62660-1, describe exactly how to do these tests
Battery Life Cycle Testing Companies
Many companies make battery life cycle testing equipment, like SINEXCEL-RE Their products are used in labs, factories, and research centers depending on what kind of tests people need.
